With 43 projects raising $1.2 billion in initial coin offeringssince May 1, according to Nick Tomaino's The Control, and with stratospheric returns for so many ICOs -- 82,000% for Ethereum, 56,000% for IOTA, 44,000% for Stratis, 21,000% for Spectrecoin -- it's no surprise that this summer through the end of 2017 marks the launches of at least 15 new crypto hedge funds.
Last September, when Olaf Carlson-Wee, the first employee of Coinbase (and the subject of this month's cover story), founded Polychain Capital with $4 million (it now has $200 million in assets under management, with investment from Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, Sequoia Capital and Union Square Ventures), he was early on the trend, but not the first.
Metastable Capital, founded by Lucas Ryan, Josh Seims and Naval Ravikant, the chief executive officer and cofounder of Angel List, was founded in the fall of 2014 and has $45 million in assets under management. Like Polychain, it follows a Warren Buffett-style buy-and-hold strategy and has so far “massively outperformed” bitcoin over that time period.
The same year saw the launch of a couple bitcoin funds. Tim Enneking ran an index-style Bitcoin fund, and veteran commodities trader Daniel Masters of Jersey-based Global Advisors launched an actively managed bitcoin fund, which last year saw returns of 71%. (Enneking also later set up a crypto trading fund offshore that he has since closed.)
Then, this spring, Blockchain Capital raised its third round to invest not only in blockchain startups but also tokens. The firm then tokenized $10 million of the $50 million fund, selling BCAP tokens to the public (but only accredited investors in the U.S.).
Coins by ROI since ICO
But now, a bigger wave of existing crypto players and old hands in finance who want in on this new world of value are launching funds. However, unsurprisingly, given how many new crypto-millionaires have been minted, complete newbies and others with little understanding of the technology are also rushing in to capitalize.
Because of this frenzy, some seasoned players in the space are refraining from jumping in. William Mougayar, general partner at early stage fund Virtual Capital Ventures and author of The Business Blockchain who organized Token Summit, wrote via email, “I don't want to be in the difficult position of explaining to my limited partners 8-14 months from now why the assets have dropped by 80% within a week.” He views the new hedge funds as helping to further inflate valuations. He plans to raise a fund after a crash or serious correction.
“If you rush gains, valuations, expectations, hype, etc... the whole thing will crash down. That is what happened in 1999/2000 with the Web. Suddenly, everything was going to be on the web, whether they were good or bad ideas, and whether they were experienced or non-experienced teams,” he wrote, adding that the same is happening with blockchains. “Reckless and greedy sentiments are leading the market. That is OK, because we need that to happen in order to flush out the bad actors and ideas from the system,” he says.
Carlson-Wee, the former head of risk at Coinbase, is projecting the latter will happen. “I’m already worried about other funds having massive blowups, like really bad risk management, really bad security practices, everything — and that it would hurt Polychain in some capacity. It’s like when Mt. Gox gets hacked, it’s bad for everyone.… I see MBAs and people from the traditional finance world saying, I’ll launch a fund in the crypto space. I’ve done derivatives on real estate, how complex could this be?” Carlson-Wee says, noting that “even just one year [of experience in crypto] feels scary to me.”
Guess we’ll see which of these new funds on the block are still around after a market correction.
This Cayman Islands-based fund is currently trading with $13 million but aims to eventually manage $300 million and also offer an ICO. Its strategy is a mix of manual trading, algorithmic trading, and ICO investing. It has so far invested in Ethereum, Ark, Ethereum Classic and PeerCoin, as well as ICOs MetalPay, Blocktix, Matchpool, Aeternity, and Skycoin. CEO Liam Robertson is a chartered financial analyst with experience in wealth management and trading.
Auryn, which launches in August with $12.5 million, aims to be a holding company for a crypto hedge fund, “light pool” (as opposed to "dark pool") exchange, decentralized exchange, ICO incubator, and token called Karma (to launch this September). Founder Sean Ironstag is a crypto trader who turned $15,000 into $3 million in three years. (Read about him and another trader in this magazine story.) The investor in Bitcoin, Ether, Augur’s REP, Litecoin, XRP, Game Credits and Dogecoin says, “Anybody right now with half a mind and at least four fingers can click some buttons and get in on this inevitable exponential rise in crypto and make money, make massive returns.” The fund will employ a strategy that mixes technicals, fundamentals, algorithmic trading, predictive AI and crowdsourced human traders’ analysis. Of the algorithmic strategy, Ironstag says it will make “an INSANE amount of money.” He and partners like Jonathan Teo recently departed from Binary Capital have purchased 40 acres in the Santa Cruz mountains and 500 acres in Uganda, the latter of which they hope to give to refugees from South Sudan. The value of their properties will be represented partially by Karma, which they hope to turn into a “universal basic asset” token also consisting of Auryn’s returns and the ICOs in the first class of their incubator.
BlockTower was founded by former University of Chicago Endowment portfolio manager Ari Paul and former Goldman Sachs vice president Matthew Goetz. Contrasting Block Tower’s active trading strategy against Polychain’s and MetaStable’s buy-and-hold philosophy, Paul says, “[BlockTower] is a very different kind of bet.” The fund, which expects to launch in August with about $50 million, follows a mix of strategies: It will trade on events such as conference announcements, forks and new coin listings; pursue “activist” investing in smaller cryptocurrencies and helping them gain traction with developers and on exchanges; and invest in themes such as decentralized file storage.
Launching this winter, Block View, which is targeting assets under management of between $10-$20 million, will actively manage a diversified portfolio of crypto assets as well as invest in some of the underlying blockchain companies. It may also consider mining cryptocurrencies. Cofounders Markellos Venetos, Cristian Tavarez, and Ramsan Younatham, are all recent grads who have been involved in cryptocurrency since 2011 as traders and enthusiasts.
After a soft launch in March with some personal money, Brian Kelly, a money manager, CNBC Fast Money commentator and author of The Bitcoin Big Bang, officially opened his crypto-asset hedge fund on July 1 with the goal of reaching $50 million in AUM. The BKCM Digital Asset Fund will employ a three-pronged strategy: buy-and-hold for about 50% of the tokens, ICOs for 20% and actively managed for the remaining. Investments consist of foundational protocol tokens such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, currencies such as Litecoin, XRP, Zcash and Stellar, plus tokens such as Golem Network Tokens (GNT), Augur’s REP and Siacoin. Investors include high net worth individuals and family offices.
6. Coinshares 1 LP
Masters’ Global Advisors launched its second fund June 6thwith $5 million in assets under management. The Jersey-based fund is investing in tokens powering decentralized application as well as protocol tokens (Ether, Tezos and EOS would be examples). Its first investment will be $1 million in decentralized ticketing platform, Aventus.
This, the sixth fund and third crypto-related fund managed by Tim Enneking (one was a bitcoin fund he managed for its owners and the second an offshore crypto fund he shut down), launched in June with $10 million and aims to manage $400 million. Its strategy divides crypto assets into blue chip such as bitcoin, large cap (market cap of $200 million up), mid cap (market cap of $20 million and higher), small cap ($2 million+ market cap), pennies and "dead" (the 100+ coins with zero trading volume). The open-ended fund has so far traded in coins like Game Credits and PotCoin as well as invested in coins like Bitcoin and Ether for fundamentals.
This fund for Latin American investors founded by a former Bain senior manager Roberto Ponce Romay will launch within the next six weeks with $10 million in commitments and aims to raise $50 million by year’s end. To begin, the buy-and-hold fund will invest in bitcoin, Ether, Zcash, XRP, Litecoin and Dash. By end of year, it plans to launch a second fund that would actively trade and participate in ICOs.
9. Crypto Lotus
This fund, which formally begins trading July 31 and aims to manage $40 million, was founded by three general partners: managing director Joshua Goldbard who said via Facebook message that he is “a high school dropout that gets neurotically focused on things,” and was previously a telecom product manager; crypto trader Kevin Fischer, who is now chief investment officer; and security engineer Apneet Jolly as chief information security officer. The fund strategy is to invest in “philosophically sound currencies,” such as Bitcoin, Ether and Tezos, have an “altcoin weighted basket” that acts like an index and exploit arbitrage opportunities.
10. Cryptocurrency Fund LLP
As reported by CoinDesk, this new fund aims to raise $200 million to invest in crypto assets. CEO Paul Savchuk is a former securities trader and foreign trade manager.
11. General Crypto
This fund, targeting $25 million in assets under management, takes a venture-style approach, investing in coins with technology that could solve a real world problem. So far, it's invested in Ripple (XRP), which is tackling international wire transfers, Golem (GNT) for decentralized computing, and Factom (FCT) for real estate titling, bank and audit records and other applications for immutable records. The cofounders are six-time entrepreneur Logan Kugler and crypto trader and VC Zach Hamilton. Crypto exchange CEO Bill Shihara is an advisor, as are Ryan Swagar and Brandon Zuener, managing partners at Venture51.
This $25 million fund launched July 1 and was founded by two recent Case Western University graduates, Ari Lewis and Sagar Rambhia, who plan to employ a mix of fundamentals, event-driven arbitrage trading and algorithmic trading. It has so far invested in Ether, Civic, Bitcoin, Singles and Storj. The founders learned about cryptocurrency in high school and have mined and invested in it. They also founded Koalah, a mobile app in which players could bet on the outcome of games using bitcoin.
13. Pantera Capital's ICO Fund
Pantera Capital, founded by Tiger Management alum Dan Morehead, launched the first U.S. digital asset fund in 2013, the Pantera Bitcoin Fund. A few weeks ago, it announced what the firm believes is the first initial coin offering fund. Closing July 31, the fund will purchase tokens via pre-sales through SAFTs (simple agreement for future tokens) and during token sales; it launches with $100 million.
This hedge fund with more than $100 million committed will launch at end of summer. The four founders, Chris Dover, Travis Steffen, Whitney Stefko and Joe Stolte, have more than 18 years experience in global macro, algorithmic and high frequency trading, as well as security, risk management and venture. The fund will both short trades and go long and will use discretionary and proprietary algorithms that have been deployed in equities, futures, options and currencies in 2008 and that have performed well in crypto as well.
Launching next week, SuperBloom has both a $10 million hedge/venture fund as well as an accelerator/investment bank. The latter aims to be the Y Combinator of ICO companies to help reduce their costs, set a standard for reputable firms and create a network for founders. Cofounder Emmie Chang says the two-part strategy is designed to increase the efficiency of crypto markets as well as grow the pie. SuperBloom will hold a $30 million pre-ICO crowdsale for the Seed token in August for both accredited and nonaccredited investors to fund its accelerator companies. Seed holders can exchange the token for an individual company's pre-sale token for a 20% discount. Fund investors are primarily friends and other founders in Silicon Valley. A month ago when she was affiliated with Auryn Capital, Chang described how she got a guy at a bar to be a limited partner and invest $300,000: “I was like, we’re in a bar. If you don’t wire this money to me, I’m going to mess up my relationships, and this other guy was like, no no, I vouch. He can definitely do it. So I was like, okay ... I’m going to trade on this and practice, and this is my betting strategy” — she corrected herself — “this is my trading strategy.” Afterward, she was surprised when the investor didn't follow through. (When asked later, she said she told that story because "It basically shows that this world is so fast moving that the deals are happening in bars and Wechat groups.") Chang, who is stepping back from her role at the YC-backed education tech startup she founded, FutureLeague, is partnering with Kenzi Wang who founded influencer marketplace Traction Labs and another cofounder who declined to be named. The three have educational backgrounds in engineering, math, computer science and business. She says, “We don’t purport to say we are super amazing traders, but we have as much experience as what’s out there.”
Update, Thursday, July 13, 2017, 8:45pm EST: An earlier version of this post misstated that Augur cofounder Jeremy Gardner invested in land with Sean Ironstag of Auryn Capital; Gardner is only considering investing.
